In 2016, Social Explorer was named Best Law Website in the 20th Annual Webby Awards, although the winning entry was not Social Explorer in its entirety, but a specific project Andy and his team had developed: The Threat to Representation for Children and Non-Citizens, which examined the potential impact that the Evenwel v. Abbott Supreme Court case could have had on political representation across the nation.
The plaintiffs in that case argued that redistricting should be based on the number of eligible voters rather than total residents – a change that would have dramatically altered the distribution of political power. Andy analyzed the effects of such a change in a special report, and Social Explorer developed a companion interactive tool to illustrate those findings – one that was ultimately used by hundreds of news outlets, community organizations, and political groups.
In presenting the award, Webby Awards Executive Director David-Michel Davies said that Social Explorer had "set the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet," calling the honor "a testament to the skill, ingenuity, and vision of its creators."
